Criteria

Youth - 7 to 12 years old

  • A topic of their choosing that relates to Canadian Agriculture

  • Must be educational and maintain a theme

  • The information must be accurate and attribution is extremely important, please keep track of your sources.

  • You will also be evaluated on creativity

  • Plain language is a must

  • Written in either French or English

  • Must be between 10-20 pages, and have a minimum of 5 words per page. Images and illustrations should also be included.

  • Only 1 entry is permitted per person or per group.

  • Plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification. Nor is copyrighted material permitted.

  • Note to parents: please let your children run wild with their imaginations, we can’t wait to see what they can create on their own.

 

Youth - 13 to 30 years old

  • Only 1 entry is permitted per person or per group.

  • Plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification. Nor is copyrighted material permitted.

  • Note to parents: please let your children run wild with their imaginations, we can’t wait to see what they can create on their own.

Terms and Conditions

Entries will be scored on the following six elements (creativity, educational content, accuracy of information, ability to maintain a theme, plain language, and proper attribution.

  1. The Youth Inspired! Children’s Book Competition is open to Canadians between the ages of 7 to 30.

  2. Entrants must indicate their age upon entering (must be between 7 and 30 years old as of June 1st, 2020), so that their submission can be judged accordingly (7 to 12 years old, and 13 to 30 years old). *The age of each participant will be taken into consideration while judging takes place.

  3. There is a page limit for each entry class. Participants who are 7 to 12 years old must meet the 10 to 20 page limit, while ensuring that they meet a minimum of 5 words per page. Participants who are 13 to 30 years old must meet the 15 to 35 page limit, while ensuring that they meet a minimum of 5 words per page.

  4. Entries can be written in French or English.

  5. Only one entry per participant is allowed, this includes those who choose to submit an entry as part of a group (i.e. group of students, youth group, classroom, etc.).

  6. Once an entry is submitted, participants will not have the opportunity to revise it.

  7. Entries will not be returned to participants.

  8. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. CAFE encourages participants to use their creativity to the utmost, while still ensuring that the children’s book is educational. Therefore, participants are encouraged to give proper attribution to all sources used (i.e. online sources, books, educational pamphlets, etc.). Please provide a list of sources with your submission.

  9. Children’s Book entry should not include the participant’s personal details including full name, age, or province.

  10. The final copy submitted for the competition must be the entrant's own work, and cannot be excessively corrected or improved by another person.

  11. Upon entering the Children’s Book Competition, participants must provide their full name, age, and contact information. Please note: Winners and Runners-up of the Children’s Book Competition will have their first name, age, and province displayed on the CAFE website, Canadian Fair News, CAFE E-News, and on social media. Full name, age, and province will be included in each book published.

  12. Entries may be submitted in the following ways:

    • Filling out the “CAFE – Youth Inspired! Children’s Book Competition” form and attaching your entry as a PDF document

    • Emailing a PDF document directly to CAFE at holly@canadian-fairs.ca

    • Mailing a paper copy to CAFE Headquarters must include the printed Youth Inspired! Children’s Book Competition Form available here. All entries must be postmarked or received at CAFE Headquarters by September 25, 2020.

  13. All submissions are the property of CAFE and give CAFE the right to reproduce and sell books to the public.

  14. Prizes include:

    • Prize money for Youth 7 to 12 years old: 1st - $250.00, 2nd - $150.00, 3rd - $100.00.

    • Prize money for Youth 13 to 30 years old: 1st - $250.00, 2nd - $150.00, 3rd - $100.00.

  15. All Winners and Runners-up will receive a copy of their published book.

Timeline

  • March 1, 2020 Competition begins

  • September 25, 2020 Deadline for submissions

  • Late September – Early October entries will be reviewed and judged

  • November 1, 2020 Winners will be contacted

  • November 12, 2020 Winners and Runners-up will be announced at the annual CAFE Convention in Regina, SK.
